In honour of Bob Marley’s birthday yesterday I am posting
Rasta Quilt.
This quilt was made as a wedding gift for my brother-in-law
Christopher and his wife Hellen. Chris
is a lover of Jamaican food and culture hence the Rastafarian colours of Red
Green and Gold and Hellen had her apartment decorated in greys and accents of
black.
This quilt has over 640 different fabrics. The pattern is an adaptation of the Grandmother’s Fan quilt
block and I can’t take credit for the design idea, as many years ago I saw
something similar in a calendar. I did
enter this quilt into a local quilt show and it won a first prize ribbon.
Do you create your own designs?
ReplyDeleteEdith - that is one cool quilt and I can definitely see why it won a first prize ribbon - awesome. Will we see it at Heritage Park in May?
ReplyDeleteLove the expression of color and the way you made an old-fashioned block so modern and hip and fun!
ReplyDeleteMary, Usually what I do is modify designs that I see to suit me, sometimes colour, scale or something else needs to be changed.
ReplyDeleteCrazy, Thank you, this dear quilt is 21 years old and lives far away from here, so it won't be at Heritage Park. However I should think about making a quilt to enter, I'm happy and proud to see some of my students quilts at the Heritage Park show every year.
Bonnie, Thanks, when I was thinking about a name for my business I toyed with the words colour and tradition.
Hi Edith. This quilt looks wonderful. Very complex colour placement. Congratulations on the first place - easy to see why!! Like you I am new to blogland. I hope you might click over to sewwellmaide.com.au to say hello and follow along on my quilting journey.
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Karen
Thanks Karen, and thanks for the invite, lovely blog.
ReplyDelete640 different fabrics? WOW! I love its whimsical design.
ReplyDeleteThanks Laurel, glad you like it. Yes, more than 640 different fabrics - not a typo. Almost every piece in this quilt is a different fabric, it took me about 3 months to collect them all.
