Inch by Inch Block

Inch by Inch Block

These blue and white blocks are made from scraps that are any multiple of 1 inch (plus seam allowances).  I place my ruller on the scrap and see what size of a piece I can get out of it, and then start building them into 10 inch blocks.  It’s what I call my Inch by Inch block.  "Inch by Inch, row by row, I’m gonna make this little quilt grow."  Many of these fabrics where given to me by my friend Nancy Lindquist former owner of Villa Factory Clothing.

For the month of July the colour for the Rainbow ScrapChallenge is Blue, go to soscrappy to be inspired with what others are doing with their blue scraps.

I love blue and white and have a huge stash of blue fabric.  I collect blue and white porcelain and seem to be always drawn to the colour blue.

  1. Nice system for making improv blocks. Working in 1 inch multiples is a nice way to organize things.

    1. Yes I do find it a nice way to organize. Sort, organize, sew, things quilters like to do.

    1. Yes Lynne, any number of growing blocks can sit on the shelf and I can just keep adding my new cuts of fabric until next time I want to sit down and grow the blocks.

  5. Great blue blocks. I have never heard of inch by inch multiple blocks. Sounds like a good way to deal with scraps of fabric. Love your blocks. Do you know it there is a tutorial on the web somewhere for constructing this block?

    1. Sheila, Thank you, I made this up so didn't follow anything I've ever seen before, however you have given me a great idea, I think my next Tuesday Tutorial will be Edith's Inch by Inch Quilt. It might take me a couple of weeks to get set up as I'm taking a little vacation in a week, and a few other things to clear first. Probably around July 31.

  6. I like this technique for scrappy blocks - it seems like a good way to use the little scraps AND have lots of scrappy variety.
