Pink Cog quilt block

Pink is our colour for the month of May with the RainbowScrap Challenge (RSC), and I am starting this month with my Cog quilt blocks. 

I was making four a month and then yesterday realized that I need 48 blocks to make a full/queen size quilt, so I need to up my number to five to have nearly enough blocks by the end of October and all the colours of the rainbow.

I’m so enjoying Spring in Calgary, here is a pink cog block with one of my deck containers. 

Once I get my blog post done I hope to get out in the sun and do a little gardening.

Deer Baby quilt

Lynda made this Deer Baby quilt as a special request, to match a nursery décor. 

The Deer in the Woods pantograph by Dave Hudson was a perfect match. 

Quilted with a mocha coloured Glide thread.

April’s One Monthly Goal

I’m so happy to have completed my One Monthly Goal (OMG) for April.  At the beginning of the month I set out to quilt and bind this blue and white quilt which I believe is the oldest item in my stack (many stacks) of projects on the go. 

This quilt is full of so many memories, I think I might just have to keep it for myself.  It all began with a bag of cotton scraps my friend Nancy gave me, leftovers from her clothing business.  I pulled all the blue and white fabrics and began cutting into pieces that were multiples of one and a half inches (to finish at multiples of one inch) anything up to 10 ½ inches as the finished squares are all 10 ½ inches.  In Nancy’s collection are pieces of fabric from clothing that I bought from her – memories.  I then added blue and whites from my stash which included bit of past sewing projects.  There is a piece from my husband’s nightshirt , some from my daughter and my son’s baby quilts, some blues from my DoubleWedding Ring quilt, the Winner’s Bouquet and other quilts, pieces from a block exchange, a bag that I made to carry quilt projects, the toaster cover for my step-mother and more.  So many stories in this memory quilt, it just makes me happy.

I decided to piece the back, originally thinking I would piece larger pieces from my stash, and then I got carried away and began cutting them into 10 inch squares. 

My son helped me pick the Circuit pantograph by Anne Bright.

Yellow Quarter Log Cabin quilt blocks

For the last Saturday of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) I’ve completed my four Quarter Log Cabin quilt blocks in yellow/gold, our colour for April. 

Once again, as in January with my blue blocks, my quarter log cabin blocks are a little more predictable with each side of the new strip being the same colour.  In February and March I was more random.  I think I would like to continue with a more random block.

Yesterday I did some container planting, these should all be more plentiful by Summer. 

I’m looking forward to May and a new colour to play with. I hope you can take a moment to see what others are doing for the RSC.

Squared Away

This week for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge I made the blocks for the 2018 Sampler called Squared Away. 

Mari, from The Academic Quilter who has written up the instructions for this block says “This is actually a very old block with several names, called 4X Star in the Ladies' Art Company catalogue in 1895.  It appears again as a Carrie Hall block in 1935, and here it is in our quilt in 2018.”

I really enjoyed working with yellow, it’s so bright and cheery.

Yellow Cogs

Our Rainbow Scrap Challenge colour for the month of April is yellow or gold, so I have started this month with my Cog quilt blocks. 

If I stay on track and make four blocks in each colour through our 10 months of RSC colours I should have 40 blocks by the end of October. 

For some reason I wasn’t quite able to keep up with my green projects in March, so this week I also finished my lime/light green Quarter log cabin quilt blocks.

My April Goal

I’ve picked what I believe is the oldest of my unfinished projects to be my One Monthly Goal (OMG) for April. 

My hope is to quilt and bind this blue and white quilt.  Started a long time ago, I can’t even remember when, with fabric from my friend Nancy and then I added fabric from my blue and white stash. 

Lately I have been piecing the backs of my quilts with fabric in my stash, like most of us (quilters) I have a lot to choose from.
